The Give Back Charity is a community I made up. This all started in the fourth grade, when my friend (let’s call him Bob) forgot to pack his lunch bag, so he didn’t have snack. 😦 I had extra, so I had given him a cereal bar.
The next day, someone else at our table (we’ll call him Rob) had forgotten his back pack, so Bob gave him a cosmic brownie since he had two. Then Bob, Rob, and I made a group called The Big Back Charity. Obviously, this name isn’t the best to try to help kids make a group like this one, but don’t worry this was later changed to The Give Back Charity, which I should probably make Bob and Rob aware of.
Anyway, you might be wondering, “so how does this work?” Well, everyday, pack one or two extra snacks. Then, when lunch time comes, look around and notice who doesn’t have a snack. Then, give them that extra one you packed this morning. If you forget to pack your lunch one day, the Bobs and Robs in your group will have an extra snack for you. Kind of like take a penny, leave a penny.
But be sure to be mindful of allergies. You could take a pen and paper and write down everyone’s allergies. If someone new joins the group, have them write theirs down too. But if you don’t want to do that, just bring in snacks that don’t have a common allergen in them. If you do accidentally bring in a food that someone is allergic to, they also have other people in the group to chose from.
You can also give away snacks to people who don’t like the one they or their mom packed (we have all been there before) and some kids don’t have enough money for lunch, but if everyone comes together to pack an extra snack or drink, then no one will go hungry. Because if we don’t take care of each other, who will? Tell your kids about this group and encourage them to make one of their own. Let me know what they think or what they end up doing.
