I know, I know. It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything.
What can I say? I’ve been busy!
I won’t bore you with the details of my daily life (for now) but figured it was high time to post another update (despite not having anything to update you with). Besides, my favorite time of year is finally among us. Spooky season! (Christmas, wait your turn).
For those of you who are unaware, Halloween is no longer confined to the 24 hour period known as October 31st. In recent years, I’ve personally declared Halloween to be its own month. Christmas gets two days, so why not Halloween? Ridiculous! At first, I considered the week of October 31st, but that still wasn’t enough. However, after years of celebrating the month of Halloween, I’ve determined that 8.49% of the year still isn’t enough.
With that being said, I’ve decided to initiate the observation of spooky season to coincide with the autumnal equinox. So, Happy Halloween, everybody! Since it’s on September 22nd and we’re already on day three of October, feel free to jumpstart the festivities if you haven’t already. Then mark your calendar for next year! Just keep in mind, given that equinoxes are astronomical events, it won’t be the same date every year. It will range from September 21st to September 24th, depending on when the sun crosses the celestial equator, but your best bet will just be to google it or pay attention to the “First day of Fall” markers on your calendar.
Also, Thanksgiving is canceled. Sorry, pilgrim. I’ll gladly partake in a harvest festival, but I’m not watching football and eating turkey. Harvest festivals are great, but that’s not the point of the national holiday here in the US. It doesn’t even fall on a day that makes sense for a bountiful harvest in New England. Whether you consider its origins to be the colonizing of America, Governor Bradford’s celebration of genocide of the Pequot tribe, or the constant promotion done by the church, it just doesn’t make sense to me. I’ll eat some vegetarian stuffing with family and friends, but don’t think I’m considering it to be anything more than dinner.
As much as I would love to go into depth about my disgust with the persistent mistreatment of indigenous peoples of America, I’ve got shit to do and that subject deserves its own post. However, since we’re on the subject…
